Arlene Litchfield

Arlene (Champney) Litchfield grew up on a farm east of Ft.  Macleod.  She loved to draw as a child & her artistic talent was inherited from and encouraged by her mother who painted in oils.

At university she minored in art/music but Arlene’s first serious artistic endeavors were landscapes and seascapes of the Hawaiian Islands while she and her husband were living there.  (1966-1970) She enrolled in graduate classes in oils and watercolors and her efforts resulted in a successful one-man show.

Upon moving to Medicine Hat in 1970,  Arlene resumed her teaching career in the elementary school and her artistic career went on the  “back burner”.  In 1982 she received an MA in Art Education and was employed by the Art Department at the Medicine Hat College.  In 1991, wanting to make art rather than teach it,  she took early retirement & became affiliated with the Medicine Hat Art Club & Strathcona Studios & pursued her painting career with gusto.  As a result her paintings were accepted in many local & juried exhibitions throughout the province.  Over the next few years she held her own shows in Medicine Hat,  Ft. Macleod,  Raymond,  Pincher Creek,  & Rosebud.  Her artwork also included set designs for  “Brigadoon”  &  “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers”  for Medicine Hat Musical Theatre.

Since moving to Lethbridge in 2006,  she joined the AAC,  SAAG & the Lethbridge Artists Club.  She works in oils, watercolor,  acrylics,  pen & ink & photography capturing a wide variety of subject matter.  Her work is realistic in style reflecting an eye for color & detail.  Since she enjoys painting on  “site” much of her portfolio includes scenes from her travels to such places as: England,  Ireland,  France,  Scotland,  Russia,  Ukraine,  Egypt,  Israel,  Hawaii, Florida,  Louisiana,  California,  Idaho,  Oregon,  Montana,  British Columbia,  Atlantic Canada & of course Southern Alberta.  Her paintings are found in many private collections in Canada & the U. S.  and in several countries abroad.
